  • Title: Rare Shiebler Monumental 1899 Sterling Silver Vase Gift of The Vice President of the United States Hobart to Sir John Milne Barbour
  • Description: Here is a beautiful sterling silver vase in the neoclassical style, prettily decorated with repousse roses. Presented as a wedding gift in 1899 by Garret A. Hobart, vice-president of the United States. The vase is beautifully symmetrical with wide borders of lovely repousse roses intertwined with other pretty blossoms around both the bottom and upper rim. An extra decorative element in the form of pierced work has been subtly incorporated into the design around the upper rim, adding to its charm. Be-ribboned swags of rosebuds encircle the center of the vase, drawing the eye inwards and emphasizing its graceful shape. Four incised lines flow downwards, also highlighting the vase's shape and form. They culminate at the base in chased and repousse floral decorations which artfully frame the historic inscription on the front and a handsome crest on the back. The crest is bordered by curving forms and a hand brandishing a Maltese Cross. Beneath this, a furled banner bears the Latin phrase "Nihil Hisi Cruce" ("Nothing By the Cross"). The front has been superbly engraved in an elaborate decorative script with the important inscription. To Mr. & Mrs. 3. Milne on the occasion of their marriage, June 1st, 1899, from the Vice President and Mrs. Garret A. Holbart. The base is clearly stamped Sterling together with the identifying mark of George W Shiebler of New York, and the name Galt and Bro, a maker of fine silver located in Washington DC and admired by the former president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. This historically significant vase stands 18in.
