  • Description: Attributed to Michael Dahl (swedish), portrait of a young woman shepherdess iAt first glance, it checks all the boxes. The sitter, identified as Juliana, Lady Bruce, shown not in stiff court dress but a softer, pastoral style that was popular with the English upper class. Her pale bodice is simple and elegant, near s green draper. She holds a staff, and at her side a loyal dog looks up at her symbol of loyalty and character. It’s a calm, confident image, and very much in line with what we expect from Dahl. This is a Portrait of Juliana Lady Bruce and a hound. This portrayal of a regal woman with flowing fabric and a hound at her side represents that came from significant money but was a loyal and caring individual. The shepherd’s staff also implies that she was a guiding force to those who served her.

  • Condition: Fine estate discovery condition. Significant cracking on frame and some estate dust and debris along the surface of both frame and piece. Frame shows scattered surface scuffs and chipping. Picture wire is broken. Notable abrasions near face on top of canvas. Sticker on back states “Attr.
