  • Title: Powerful Antique Pharaohs Horses Oil Painting Master Study After John Fredrick Herring
  • Description: Powerful Antique Pharaohs Horses Oil Painting Master Study After John Fredrick HerringA very lovely antique unsigned master study of a painting by John Fredrick Herring. The canvas and frame are in beautiful shape and indicate its age.

High quality in the style of Herring or Herring Jr. Family folklore says it came into the possession of their great-grandfather, Amos Wilson Appleton from Iowa, around 1893 or 1894. Originally an aged note was on the back questionably attributing it to the famous French animal artist Rosa Bonheur.  The painting is on a stretcher patent dated 1887, so either it was reframed at that time or painted after 1887.

  • The subject Arabian horse that Herring Sr. likely possibly used for this painting was originally given to Queen Victoria by the Imaum of Muscat  (Oman) and later was gifted to her Royal Clerk of the Stables and later purchased by Herring at auction at Tattersall's Auction House,  England. (Sotheby's N.Y. 25 April, 2006).

This is not your normal Herring repro—likely a competent American animal painter, not a crude commercial copy. The handling of the horse's eye, muzzle, and cheek is accomplished.

Frame stamped “AH ABBOTT, patent July 1887.”

The horses are depicted dramatically in a tightly grouped composition, with strong, expressive eyes and flared nostrils. The composition has notable similarities to Herring Sr. and Jr., and Rosa B. also produced many equestrian studies.

We would categorize this as American or European School, 19th century, with a period Chicago frame.

Age-appropriate craquelure, surface grime, and scattered wear.
